Expected Launch: Late 2025 / Early 2026

KTM is finally back in the sportbike game, and they aren’t playing by the usual rules. The 2026 KTM 990 RC R is not just a faired Duke; it’s a genuine, road-legal supersport that bridges the gap between the torque-heavy twins and the screaming inline-fours. It’s sharp, it’s orange, and it’s arguably the most exciting “real world” sportbike launching this year.

Design: Aggressive Functionality

KTM’s design language is always polarizing, but the 990 RC R leans hard into “aggressive aero.” The wind-tunnel-carved fairings feature MotoGP-inspired winglets that aren’t just for show—they provide stability at high speeds without killing the bike’s agility.

  • Ergonomics: Surprisingly adjustable. It features a six-point ergonomic adjustment system (footpegs, handlebars, seat height), allowing you to switch from a committed track tuck to a (relatively) comfortable street posture.
  • The Dash: It sports a massive 8.8-inch TFT touchscreen display. It’s horizontal, huge, and looks more like a tablet than a traditional gauge cluster, offering incredible readability.

Engine Performance: The Torque Monster

Powering this beast is the 947cc LC8c Parallel-Twin engine. It’s compact, lightweight (only 57kg!), and tuned for punchy performance.

  • Power & Torque: It puts down 130 PS (128 HP) and 103 Nm of torque. While that horsepower figure is lower than the liter-bikes, the torque is available instantly.
  • The Experience: It rips out of corners. Where a 600cc supersport needs to be at 12,000 RPM to wake up, the 990 RC R pulls hard from the midrange. It’s perfect for the street where stoplight-to-stoplight acceleration matters more than 200 mph top speeds.

Mileage: The Efficient Scalpel

Because it’s a twin-cylinder engine, it’s surprisingly frugal compared to the thirsty V4s.

  • Fuel Economy: Expect around 4.7L/100km (approx. 50 mpg) if you ride sensibly.
  • Range: With a generous 15.7-liter fuel tank, you can comfortably get over 300km (186 miles) on a tank. This makes it a genuinely viable option for weekend touring or daily commuting without constant fuel anxiety.

Safety Features: Track Tech for the Road

KTM didn’t skimp on the electronics. The 990 RC R comes with a suite of rider aids managed by a 6D IMU.

  • Cornering ABS & MTC: Lean-sensitive traction control and ABS are standard.
  • Supermoto ABS: A classic KTM feature. You can disengage the rear ABS to slide the back end into corners while keeping the front safety net active.
  • Track Mode (Optional): Unlocks telemetry, lap timers, and sharper throttle response for when you hit the circuit.

Pricing: The Sweet Spot

The 990 RC R is positioning itself aggressively. The US MSRP is confirmed at $13,949.

  • India Expectations: If launched, expect it to be a premium offering, likely in the ₹14 Lakh – ₹16 Lakh range (ex-showroom), competing directly with the Triumph Street Triple RS and Kawasaki ZX-6R.
  • Value: You get premium WP suspension, Brembo Stylema/Hypure brakes, and a unique engine character for a price significantly lower than the European liter-bikes.

Why You Should Buy It

This is the bike for the rider who wants to feel like a MotoGP pilot but rides on public roads. It’s not about hitting 300km/h in a straight line; it’s about carving corners with surgical precision and having torque on tap at any RPM. It’s comfier than a pure track weapon but sharper than a naked bike. It’s the perfect middleweight.
